The new £38,700 salary threshold
From April 2024, the Skilled Worker general salary rose from £26,200 to £38,700 (median UK earnings). Health/care workers, new entrants and shortage occupations retain lower thresholds. Confirm your role's SOC code against the sortable Home Office table before signing an offer.
Immigration Salary List (ISL)
The ISL replaced the older Shortage Occupation List. Notable ISL roles: care workers, chefs, animal care, clinical scientists, biological scientists. ISL roles get a 20% salary discount vs the general threshold — so £30,960 instead of £38,700.
Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)
Your employer needs a valid sponsor licence (searchable on gov.uk register). Once assigned, the CoS has a 3-month validity to submit your visa application. Digital CoS reference goes on your online form.
Path to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
5 continuous years on Skilled Worker → apply for ILR. Absences under 180 days per rolling 12-month window. Life in UK test + English B1. Then 1 more year → British citizenship. Realistic 6-year total from arrival to passport.
